Afn Veg features a side-by-side glossary, discussion questions and audio recordings. This unique book, edited by Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath, is a tremendous contribution to the learning materials available to today’s Yiddish students and lovers of Yiddish in general. The collection of adapted Peretz short stories gives the reader access to the very best that Yiddish literature has to offer, yet at such a level that even advanced beginners can comprehend it.
Every short story is divided into smaller chapters, with discussion questions at the end of each chapter. One feature that makes this reader so useful for students is the side-by-side glossary. The more difficult words and expressions appear in bold letters; right next to the Yiddish text is a glossary containing their translation, and in some cases, also the pronunciation. In order to make the stories even more appealing, each one is accompanied by a gorgeous drawing by the talented artist Yidl (Yehuda) Blum.
